Back in the eighties I was working as a Recreational staff member in a nursing home. Each day I would bring my guitar, sing songs and share stories with the residents. They were lined up in the corridors, on different floors, and would wait for me to show up. We sang together shared stories and became like family. The smiles of appreciation on their faces told me how much they looked forward to talented and experienced artists visiting them for an hour or two. Therefore, I started “Joy Through Art”, and the dream became a reality. We now hire professionals to visit patients and residents on a day to day basis. This helps enrich their lives and helps to dispel the loneliness of being in a home where one misses the families of long ago. The artist, instead becomes like family. This is important.
